Crochet Cotton Diaper Cover - Free Pattern

Okay this is my second crochet pattern for preemie babies. These covers are so cute and they are easy to put on as they undo and go on just like a diaper.


Crochet Cotton Diaper Cover Pattern

This is to fit a preemie about 5lb. The finished product should be about 10" diameter at the base. Laying flat the measurements should be about 6 1/4" across the hips and 4 1/4" from top to bottom.

You can make this smaller (or larger) by using a smaller (or larger) hook size, and/or a lighter (heavier) weight yarn. You can find a tutorial with pictures on how to make a magic ring here: www.planetjune.com/magicring.

For a boy, simply leave off the flower adornment.

#4 worsted weight cotton yarn

Abbreviations:

ch - chain
sc – single crochet
dc - double crochet
YO - yarn over
st – stitch
sl st - slip stitch


Special Stitch – dc2tog:

This is a decrease stitch where you crochet 2 dc stitches together.
YO, insert hook in next dc, draw yarn through the stitch (3 loops on hook). YO, pull through 2 loops. YO, insert in next dc, draw yarn through the stitch (4 loops on hook). YO, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook). YO, pull through last 3 loops.



Instructions:

Ch 45

Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc all the way across (44 sc), ch 2, turn

Row 2: dc across, ch 1, turn

Row 3: sc across, turn

Row 4: sl st next 10 sts, ch 2, dc next 24 sts, leave remaining 10sts unworked, ch 2, turn

Row 5: dc across (24 dc), ch 2, turn

Row 6: dc2tog, dc 20sts, dc2tog (22 dc), ch 2, turn

Row 7: dc2tog, dc 18sts, dc2tog (20 dc), ch 2, turn

Row 8: dc2tog, dc 16sts, dc2tog (18 dc), ch 2, turn

Row 9: dc2tog, dc 14sts, dc2tog (16 dc), ch 2, turn

Row 10: dc2tog, dc 12sts, dc2tog (14 dc), ch 2, turn

Row 11: dc2tog, dc 10sts, dc2tog (12 dc), ch 2, turn

Row 12: dc across (12 dc), ch 2, turn

Rows 13-19: Repeat Row 12 (do not fasten off)

Edging: (This can be done in the same color or in a contrasting color) ch 1, sc around. Fasten off. Weave in ends.


Flower:
The flower consists of two layers of petals. It can be made all in one color, or the outer layer of petals can be made in a contrasting color.

Outer Petals:
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3. 10 dc inside the ring. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3. Pull ring tight.
Round 2: *Ch 3, skip 1 dc, sl st.** Repeat from * to **around. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (five ch 3)
Round 3: *7 dc in first ch 3 sp. Sl st over Round 2 sl st, into Round 1 dc.** Repeat from * to **around (5 petals). Sl st to beginning ch 3. Fasten off. Leave a longer tail of yarn to attach the flower to the hat.

Inner Petals:
Round 1: Magic ring, ch 1. Inside ring *ch 2, cluster, ch 2, sl st.** Repeat from * to ** 4 times (5 petals). Sl st to beginning ch 1. Fasten off. Leave a longer tail of yarn to attach the inner petals to the outer petals.

Attach inner petals to outer petals using yarn ends of inner petals. Weave in ends.


To Finish: Sew a button onto the center of the front flap. Close the side tabs by inserting the button between the dc stitches. Attach flower using yarn ends of outer petals. Weave in ends.
