Cluster Stitch Crochet Cotton Baby Sun Hat - Free Pattern


Materials
# 4 cotton yarn
Hook: 5 mm

Pattern:

Hat
Round 1: Magic ring, CH 2, 11 HDC in ring, join with SL ST to beg CH 2

Round 2: CH 2, 2 HDC in each st around (22 HDC total), join with SL ST to beg CH 2

Round 3: CH 2, 2 HDC, 1 HDC, 1 HDC all the way around to the last stitch. 2 HDC in the last stitch (30 HDC total), join with SL ST to beg CH 2

Round 4: CH 2, 1 HDC in each stitch around (30 HDC total), join with a SL ST.

Rounds 5 to 13:
Ch 2, 3 HDC in the same ST, CH 1, SK 2 HDC spaces. *4 HDC in the next stitch, CH 1, SK 2 HDC spaces* Repeat from * all the way around and join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

The hat should measure about 4.5” tall and be about 7.5” across the bottom.


Brim 
Round 1: CH 2, HDC in same ST. 1 HDC in each stitch around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

Round 2: CH 2, 2 HDC in same ST. *1 HDC in the next stitch. 2 HDC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * around and join with a SL ST to beginning CH 2.

Round 3: CH 2, 1 HDC in same ST, 1 HDC in next ST, 2 HDC in next ST. Repeat 1 HDC, 1 HDC, 2 HDC around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST.

Rounds 4 & 5: CH 2, 1 HDC in same ST. HDC in each ST around. Join to beginning CH 2 with a SL ST. Fasten off.

Tie
Join yarn to Round 13 at one side on the underside of the hat. CH 14. *CH2, TC, CH2, SL ST in 2nd CH from hook. Repeat from * 4 times (5 petals made). Fasten off.

Join yarn to Round 13 on other side of hat. CH 14, SL ST in 6th CH from hook to make a loop. CH14, SL ST in 6th CH from hook to make a loop. Fasten off.

You now have a tie with two loops to adjust to baby’s head size. Loop the loop on one chain side around the flower on the other chain side.

  1. Working this pattern and am on round 3 where it says to do 2 HDC, 1 HDC then 1 HDC all the way around until last stitch and 2 HDC in last stitch. I am supposed to get 30 HDC total but am only coming up with 24

    1. You should have 22 st in Round 2. Round 3 is an increase round.

      Round 3: CH 2, then 2 HDC in first st, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next stitch. Repeat the 2 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc all the way around to the last stitch and 2 HDC in the last stitch. You've increased by 8 stitches making a total of 30 sts in round 3.
