Knitted Baby Pants - Bermuda Shorts - Free Pattern

Knitted Baby Pants - Bermuda Shorts - Free Pattern
Size: 12 months
Two lengths - Bermuda Shorts or Pants
Finished pants measure approx 16" waist
Bermuda shorts are 10" long
Pants are 12 1/2" long

Knitted in the round, with a folded hem at the top and a drawstring waist. The initial cast on uses a provisional crochet cast on so that the waist hem can be neatly joined together while knitting a round, instead of sewing it together later.

I used 24" circular bamboo needles for the main body and 16" circular bamboo needles for the legs. I used a crochet hook with ergonomic soft plastic handle for the crochet work.

Yo=yarn over
Ssk= slip, slip, knit
K2tog=knit 2 sts together

Waist
Cast on 60 st using waste yarn and a provisional crochet cast on. Change to main yarn, join to work in the round. Rounds begin at the side.
Rnds 1-4: Knit
Rnd 5: Purl
Rnd 6: Knit
Rnd 7: Knit 10, yo, ssk, k2, k2tog, yo, knit to end of round. (This forms the eyelets for the drawstring)
Rnd 8-9: Knit
Rnd 10: “Unzip” provisional cast on, put live stitches on another needle, then fold over the hem at the purl ridge and join the sides of the hem together in the next round by knitting together one stitch from each needle until all stitches have been worked (60sts).
Rnd 11: Knit. Continue knitting every round until work measures 5 1/2” from top.
Next Rnd: Divide for legs. Knit 15 stitches, place next 30 stitches on a holder. You have 30 live stitches and 30 sts on a holder.

Legs
Right Leg
Next Rnd: Using the working yarn, which should be at the center front of your work cast on 4 stitches (these will form the crotch) and join to work the 30 live stitches in the round (34 sts).
Continue knitting every round for 4 ½” for Bermuda Shorts, 7" for Pants (or desired length of leg).
Next Rnd: Turn and knit stitch bind off on the wrong side. Join to first stitch, bind off and weave in ends.

Left leg
Place 30 stitches on the holder onto the needles. Rejoin yarn, knit 30 stitches, then cast on 4 stitches and join to work in the round (34 sts).
Continue knitting every round for 4 ½” for Bermuda Shorts, 7" for Pants (or desired length of leg).
Next Rnd: Turn and knit stitch bind off on the wrong side. Join to first stitch, bind off and weave in ends.

Drawstring
Crochet chain about 32".

Finishing
Thread drawstring through eyelets on waist hem. Sew crotch seam. Weave in all ends.

  1. hi - love these pants but can you give any clues as to gauge or at least yarn & needle size?
